Juvenile Counties Day 1 2019

May 11, 2019

Following on quickly from the Leevale Open the next outing for our Juveniles was the County Championships Day 1. With CIT basking in the May sunshine athletes from across the county gathered to compete in a myriad of events throughout the day.
Out in force once again were the Dorgan brothers. Sam still recovering from injury had a though day in the long jump with a couple of fouls early on and was unfortunate this time in an event he is normally strong in, not to place. Still not fully recovered from a foot injury Sam wisely decided not to compete in the demanding hurdles event. Noah competed well in the U10 600m just missing out on a place in the final and also jumped well in the long jump. Josh sprinted well again this week in the U9 60m comfortably making it to the semi final.
The mischievous trio of Cate Gilroy, Sonia Balanzin and Ava Chandler covered every inch of CIT supporting their club mates as well as competing in their own events. Sonya and Ava were part of a huge field in the long jump before Ava took on a large field in the 600m. Ava was in the leading pack of 6 for the first 500m but suddenly felt unwell and had to slow dramatically in the last 100m. Eventually finishing 7th to just miss out on the final but Ava left everything out there (including her breakfast). After a bit of recovery time the girls headed off to the sprint hurdles. Both Sonia and Ava hurdled well but missed on the semi finals however this was Cate's time to shine, a clear 2nd in her heat was quickly followed by a 3rd place finish in the semi-final. With little time to spare Cate was back for the final which was closely fought all the way with Cate finishing 6th. A great performance considering the number of athletes competing in the event.
Lara Balanzin and Sarah Drumgoole, two of our youngest athletes were in action in the 60m sprints, another huge field with 9 heats. Sarah ran really well in a fast heat to finish just outside the qualifiers. Lara then went on to finish 2nd in her heat. Moving back to the stand side of the track Lara showed no nerves in her semi-final finishing 3rd to claim a place in the final. The final, one of the best races of the day saw a blanket finish but after a review of the photo finish Lara finished in 5th place. Again another brilliant performance. The girls also tried their hand at the turbo javelin which they really enjoyed. Lilly Frawley was back again this week in the sprints and found herself in a very competitive heat with a blanket finish but unfortunately for Lilly she did not progress this time.
Unfortunately no medals for our merry crew this week but it was not for the lack of trying and all seemed to enjoy their day in the sun and all gained lots of experience for future events.
Thanks once again to family, friends and coaches for there great support.
Next up is Counties day 2 on Sunday. Best of luck to all competing. Onwards and Upwards.
